This new and Artistic Presidential State Service was first used for an intimate dinner given by President Rutherford B. Hayes for President-elect and Mrs. James Garfield in November of 1880. It's very first use, for an Official State Dinner form of entertainment, was for the formal dinner given in honor of former President Grant and his First Lady.
