STUNNING OFFICIAL WHITE HOUSE CHINA PLATES FOR SALE FROM THE ULYSSES S. GRANT AND BILL CLINTON COLLECTIONS - PART OF THE RALEIGH DeGEER AMYX COLLECTION

Sometimes Raleigh DeGeer Amyx winds up with duplicate pieces in his Official White House China collection. And, when that happens, sometimes he is willing to part with one of those pieces. That is now the case with two elegant plates, which Mr. Amyx is offering for sale.

Both plates are historic, of course, because they were owned and used by American Presidents. Beyond that fact, they couldn’t be more different. Each plate is uniquely beautiful, with its own story to tell. One is very old, the other much more recent. Let’s learn more about them.

TRULY UNIQUE 1879 ULYSSES S. GRANT OFFICIAL WHITE HOUSE CHINA FISH PLATE FOR SALE

GRANT FISH PLATE
There is no question that the colorful plates Ulysses and Julia Grant purchased on a European trip are intended for fish. The set included just 24 plates measuring 8 ½” in diameter, plus two serving plates. They are Chinese porcelain, which was immensely popular at the time – 1879 – still considered to be the world’s finest porcelain. Each piece is exquisitely hand painted, with a band of flowers and butterflies framed with thin gold bands and, in the center with a stunning large fish.

The Grant Fish Plate is available for $5,000.

ELEGANT BILL CLINTON OFFICIAL WHITE HOUSE CHINA DINNER PLATE FOR SALE

CLINTON DINNER PLATE
The porcelain commissioned by Bill and Hillary Clinton has extra presidential cachet because this china commemorates the 200th anniversary of the White House. The Clintons barely got to use the service, since it did not arrive until late in 2000, at the very end of Bill Clinton’s second term. Nonetheless, Hillary Clinton played a key role in designing this unusual collection. Because the china honors the White House itself, it seemed only fitting to her that the pieces among the collection depict the Executive Mansion.

All the pieces have the same general look – white background with a wide yellow band outlined on the inside and around the rim with narrower, patterned gold bands. However, each type of plate has a different pattern in white on the yellow band – each pattern reflecting an architectural element within one of the mansion’s formal rooms.

The Clinton dinner plate, which is for sale, has a unique ornate design. The dinner, dessert, and service plates in this collection are further distinguished in that they bear a portrait of the north front of the White House at 12 o’clock on the yellow band. White House China typically carries a version of the Presidential Seal in this position. The dinner plate also has added value compared to other Clinton White House China, because of its unique decoration and historic significance, and because the plate is larger in diameter (10.5 inches) than dinner plates in most other Presidential china collections.

The Clinton Dinner Plate is available for $5,000.

Note: All Clinton pieces that bear the 12 o'clock White House symbol are always priced more expensively than the remaining Clinton pieces that do not have such a symbol at the 12 o'clock position. Thus, the three highest priced Clinton pieces are the Service Plate, Dinner Plate, and Dessert Plate.

Bill Clinton's White House China: An Elegant set for a Unique Occasion

Posted by RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX on Wed, Jul 13, 2016 @ 10:00 AM

BILL CLINTON (1946)
OUR 42ND PRESIDENT (1993-2001)

Each First Couple has put their mark on the White House in one way or another – remodeling or redecorating, hosting different kinds of events and so on. One thing virtually all of them have done is select new Official White House China to be used for formal occasions. President Bill Clinton’s second term in office happened to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the White House residence, so not surprisingly the china he and Hillary chose commemorates that milestone.

They commissioned an American manufacturer – the esteemed Lenox – to design and produce 300 12-piece place settings. The china arrived in November 2000 and was first used at a dinner attended by former Presidents Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter and George Bush as well as their wives and former First Lady Lady Bird Johnson.

In keeping with the distinctive occasion for which it was commissioned, the china itself is unique among presidential sets. The particularly beautiful service plate has an enormous gold band with intricate raised detailing. And for the first time, the north front of the White House is depicted on the plate’s center, instead of the official presidential seal. White House architecture is featured on the other plates as well. All have a yellow rim, but each type of plate has a different architectural motif. These highlight exceptional elements from the State Dining Room, East Room and Diplomatic Reception Room.

On the 10.5” dinner plates and the 9.25” dessert plates, there is also an image of the White House itself, positioned at 12 o’clock within the yellow border. Exquisitely presented, these designs represent the first time in the history of White House China that art played such a pivotal role in the creation of functional pieces. The dishes also carry an inscription on the verso that reads “The White House Collection” as seen below. The entire set of 200th Anniversary Lenox china cost about $500,000.

Bill and Hillary Clinton were the fifth of six presidential couples who have selected Lenox to produce their Official White House China. Interestingly, it wasn’t until the 20th century that any American porcelain was considered high enough quality to grace White House tables. President Teddy Roosevelt is reported to have complained, “We are dependent upon foreign factories for the very dishes from which the Chief Executive of the United States must eat.”

bill clinton

BILL AND HILARY CLINTON

Decades earlier, in 1826, Congress had mandated that any furnishings purchased for the White House must be made in the USA. However, Presidents repeatedly ignored this law when it came to their dinnerware, because porcelain made in Europe and China was far superior. Walter Scott Lenox was determined that his American pottery could and would produce equally fine china, and Woodrow Wilson was the first president to officially acknowledge his success. In addition to President Wilson and the Clintons, FDR, Truman, Reagan and George W. Bush have all chosen Lenox to produce their Official White House china.

Although President George W. and Laura Bush used the Clinton china often for White House State Dinners, they, too, commissioned Lenox to create a new set of 320 pieces not long before Bush’s term of office expired.

Martin Greenfield: The Presidential Tailor

MARTIN GREENFIELD
"AMERICA'S GREATEST LIVING TAILOR"

Every American president has surrounded himself with political advisors. But one man has been lucky – and talented – enough to serve as fashion advisor to no less than four presidents. That man is Martin Greenfield. Who would have imagined that the teen who survived Auschwitz would eventually become a renowned tailor – not only to presidents but a host of entertainers, sports celebrities and other public figures?

Ironically, it was at Auschwitz where young Martin, born Maximillian Grunfeld, learned to sew. He and his parents, sisters, tiny brother and grandparents were taken from their Czechoslovakia home and shipped to the Nazi concentration camp when he was 15. Martin was put to work in the laundry room, where he repaired garments. At one point, he retrieved an SS shirt from the trash, re-stitched it and proceeded to wear it in secret under his camp uniform.

He says the ability to re-create and wear the shirt – a garment no other prisoner owned – gave him a special power. “Clothes don’t just make the man,” he says, “they can save the man; they did for me.”

Martin was the only member of his family who left Auschwitz. Late in World War II, he was transferred to Buchenwald, via a brutal 50-march through the snow. The camp was liberated by American soldiers in April 1945. With no idea all his immediate family were dead, Martin searched for them for two years.

He immigrated to New York, where another Czech refugee helped him get a job sweeping the floor at GGG Clothing. Under the tutelage of owner William Goldman, Martin honed his sewing skills, learning every detail of custom clothing craftsmanship. His reputation as a very fine tailor continued to grow, and General Dwight Eisenhower became his first big-name client, at the time he was running for president. That was a poignant success for Greenfield, who recalls shaking Eisenhower’s hand during the liberation of Buchenwald.

He purchased GGG Clothing in 1977, giving the firm his own name. At the time, the company had six employees; today it has more than a hundred. Besides Eisenhower, Greenfield has crafted beautiful hand-crafted suits for Presidents Ford, Clinton and Obama. Other clients have run the gamut from Paul Newman and Shaquille O’Neal to Michael Jackson, Al Pacino, Jimmy Fallon, Johnny Depp, Cardinal Edward Egan and General Colin Powell.

Another loyal client is former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. “Frankly, I’m in awe of him,” Bloomberg admits. “We’re talking about a man who fought to survive some of the worst mankind has ever shown, came to New York with nothing, worked hard, thrived, and took care of his family. Martin is some of the best we can offer. And I don’t buy my suits anywhere else.”

martin greenfield

GREENFIELD'S BOOK IS THE STORY OF A MAN WHO SUFFERED UNIMAGINABLE HORROR AND EMERGED WITH A DREAM OF SUCCESS

Through the years, Greenfield and his employees have produced suits for Hollywood film and television characters as well as “real” customers. His company also contracts with high-end retailers such as Brooks Brothers, Neiman Marcus and DKNY to make suits for their clientele.

Now well into his 80s, Martin Greenfield has published a memoir entitled “Measure of a Man,” in which he tells his horrifying and compelling life story.

Bill Clinton: The "Do-Gooder-In-Chief"

Posted by RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX on Wed, Apr 08, 2015 @ 02:30 PM

Throughout much of American history, it was traditional for presidents leaving office to go gently into retirement, occasionally consulted by successors but remaining well outside their former spotlight. In recent times, however, that has changed dramatically for some outgoing presidents, including Bill Clinton.

 clinton_at_desk_oval_office_sofa_blog_bill-clinton-at-work-desk-1

FORMER PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON IN THE OVAL OFFICE

Perhaps it’s that our presidents in recent decades have been younger – not feeling ready to relinquish all the action just because their service in the oval office has come to an end. Bill Clinton was just 46 years old when he took office in 1993, so barely in his mid-50s as he “retired” from the White House. He’s made the most of the intervening years; a former President of the United States using his unparalleled visibility, connections and clout to promote greater good around the world.

Clinton said that he wished to make a “measurable difference,” focusing on national and international problems he came to know intimately as President. Toward that end, he created the William J. Clinton Foundation when he left office in 2001. The Foundation is a non-profit dedicated to “improve global health, education, economies and environments” – a tall order, and one for which President Barack Obama has dubbed him the “Do-Gooder-in-Chief.”

bill-clinton-white-house-china-1

With staff and volunteers around the world, the Foundation works to find actionable solutions to a wide range of issues, including:

  • Improving global health Increase opportunities for women and girls
  • Reducing childhood obesity
  • Eliminating preventable diseases, especially AIDS
  • Enhancing economic opportunities in the US, Africa and Latin America
  • Helping communities deal with the effects of climate change

One of the Foundation’s most prominent projects is the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), established in 2005. CGI brings together leaders from around the world to contemplate innovative solutions to critical problems. Unlike other organizations, the Clinton Global Initiative takes a unique approach that does not involve direct action to address specific issues. Instead, the focus is on creative thinking, networking, knowledge-building and collaboration.

As part of the Clinton Global Initiative’s efforts, Bill Clinton himself has traveled to Africa five times – once accompanied by Bill Gates – to promote efforts aimed at eradicating HIV/AIDS. He has teamed up with former President George H. W. Bush three times – to raise awareness and funding to assist victims of the South Asia tsunami in 2004, of Hurricane Katrina in 2004 and Hurricane Ike in 2008.

x_bill_clinton

BILL CLINTON STILL IS ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN FINDING SOLUTIONS TO CRITICAL WORLD PROBLEMS

Clinton joined former President George W. Bush in raising money to rebuild Haiti – especially the country’s schools – following the devastating earthquake that occurred in 2010. The Foundation continues to work to create jobs and economic growth and improve sustainability in Haiti.

Most recently, “CGI University” just concluded a gathering of 1000 students from 300 schools in 75 countries, held at the University of Miami. Together, participants developed 700 Commitments to Action focusing on “new, specific, actionable plans to address pressing challenges facing campuses and communities.” Those action plans include efforts to encourage more girls to choose STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) careers, bringing affordable, renewable energy to rural communities and improving nutrition in areas the Foundation calls “food deserts.”

Bill Clinton’s action-oriented presidential after-life has drawn attention and support from governments, organizations and individuals around the world. But he has also recruited support from his own family – so much so that the Foundation was formally renamed in 2013 to reflect the extensive involvement of the former First Lady and First Daughter. It is now known as the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation.

RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX COLLECTION- LENOX WHITE HOUSE CHINA-BILL CLINTON

Posted by RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX on Wed, Mar 28, 2012 @ 09:25 AM

It pleases us to feature the Dignified Official White House State Dinner Service of William Jefferson Clinton.

Bill Clinton (1993 to 2001) – This New Official White House China, By Lenox, of Trenton, New Jersey, was Commissioned for the 200th Anniversary of The White House. However, it did not arrive until after the Presidential Election of November  2000. This was a convenient arrival date, for the Clinton's, in that most Press Attention was focused in the direction of the new President-Elect - George W. Bush. Thus less attention was paid to the arrival of this Elegant 300 total piece Presidential Set, as approved of and ordered by President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.

For reasons unknown, the Press often focuses concentrated attention on any White House China ordered by an Incumbent President. And, in the past, the comments by the Press have often been negative. This is always difficult to comprehend in that so many modern President's and First Ladies receive Private Funds for the expensive Official White House Services presented by them for permanent inclusion into The White House China Collection. In other words, some of the World's most beautiful Presidential Porcelain arrives at The White House at zero expense to the American taxpayers.

The Clintons took a totally different approach in that they eschewed the nearly always previously ordered Official Presidential Seal and instead depicted the imposing 12" Service Plate with a Gold rendition of the Executive Mansion itself.  And the Service Plate was the only one of the set with an Enormous Gilded Gold Band.

The other pieces of this 12 Piece Place Setting (total of 300 pieces), of the William Jefferson Clinton Presidential Service, all featured architectural designs from the State Dining room, The East Room and Diplomatic Reception Room - within the Gold Band.

CLINTON OVAL OFFICE SOFA|OVAL OFFICE SOFA FABRIC|PRESIDENTIAL MEMORABILIA|WHITE HOUSE MEMORABILIA|PRESIDENTIAL GIFT|THE RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX COLLECTION|THE AMERICAN HERITAGE COLLECTION|

This striking Gold Leaf Framed Relic was presented to some of the Official White House Staffers that served President William Clinton from 1993 to 2001. The beautiful fabric shown above is a Swatch of the Presidents Oval Office Sofa Upholstery Fabric shown below. President Clinton has also personally Signed the accompanying Cut Signature, which is framed with the Oval Office Fabric. All framing is believed to have been done by internal framers at The White House.  The actual swatch measures approximately 2"x 4". It is set off with matching burgundy archival matte, enclosed within an 8.5"x 8" frame. From the point of view of Presidential Gifts, this was obviously from The heart of President Clinton - straight to the hearts of those selected White House staffers that served him so tirelessly.
