The 9 Most Beautiful Examples of White House China

Posted by RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX on Thu, Apr 06, 2017 @ 10:30 AM

Everyone knows that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But picking favorites among the many collections of stunning Official White House China is no mere beauty contest. For renowned collector Raleigh DeGeer Amyx, it’s about the art – and the fact that the magnificence of each service also reflects the context of its time.

“In a portrait gallery,” he explains, “you walk into a room filled with masterpieces yet you’re drawn to certain one(s) that move you, like a song that makes you feel something.” asked to name his White House china favorites, he chose nine, noting it was “easy” to identify the first four, but hard to decide beyond that because each collection is outstanding in its own way. This is the countdown of his nine favorite White House China examples.

#9. Harry S. Truman

Similar in many ways to Woodrow Wilson’s White House China, the Truman collection exudes overall elegance. The richly-patterned green, gold, deep ivory and white provide an aesthetically appropriate harmony for official state dinners. This service is historically important because it depicts the federal eagle as “reversed” by Truman’s Executive Order in 1945, showing the eagle facing the olive branch of peace rather than the arrows of war.

#8. James Polk

Though more subtle than the surprising shapes of the Hayes china, the ornately scalloped plates are themselves works of art, reflecting a different artist’s imagination. They create a visual frame for the extensive gilded designs as well as beautifully hand-painted flowers on the dessert plates – 36 flowers to denote the 36 states in the Union. With this china, a new presidential shield is depicted for the first time in red, white and blue.

#7. Rutherford B. Hayes

There is nothing subtle about the unusual plate shapes in this White House China collection. “You either like it, or you don’t,” says Mr. Amyx. Each plate seems to have been designed to frame its colorfully detailed, hand-painted wildlife. The non-traditional aspects of this china extend to the always-present presidential emblem – it is equally colorful, but appears only on the verso. Pieces from the original 1879 order are most collectible. Although the “cypher” on the verso was supposedly rendered in red, white and blue, it appears to be gold, turquoise and orange. ”

#6. Benjamin Harrison

First Lady Caroline Scott Harrison was a very talented artist, and it is her, in part, own artwork that adorns the border of this striking White House China. In fact, it is so pretty, subsequent presidents chose to reorder the same pattern rather than make any changes. That makes some Harrison china easier for collectors to locate. However, the pièce de résistance among this collection is the rarer and more valuable morning breakfast plate that features a double border.

With this extraordinary china, the subtly scalloped edges of the plates offer a distinctive design element. But the large, beautifully detailed flowers are the main presence – 24 in all, allowing each place setting at smaller dinner gatherings to be different. This dinnerware also introduces a new presidential emblem, again chosen by the artist and approved by President and/or Mrs. Grant.

#4. Lyndon Baines Johnson

Lady Bird Johnson used her influence as First Lady to promote beautification of America’s roadsides through planting wildflowers. The state china she helped design reflects that same theme – not only pretty but perhaps a floral political statement as well. "Photos simply do not do this china justice," notes Mr. Amyx. He admits he especially loves the eagle, which borrows from Monroe and Lincoln depictions.

ronald-reagan-white-house-china-1.jpg

IMPECCABLE STATE DINNER SERVICE PLATE FROM THE 1981 RONALD REAGAN OFFICIAL WHITE HOUSE CHINA COLLECTION - MANUFACTURED BY LENOX - PART OF THE RALEIGH DeGEER AMYX COLLECTION

#3. Ronald Reagan

This china’s extraordinary creativity and beauty show in the bold scarlet border (Nancy Reagan’s favorite color), bounded by gold cross-hatching on the service and dessert plates. "The color and design are both striking, like a lady in a perfect red dress," yet they take their inspiration from artistic elements in early White House China patterns.

#2. Abraham Lincoln

Presidents are America’s version of royalty, so this china also features a variation of Royal Purple – in this case a rich, warm tone called Solferino, chosen personally by Mary Todd Lincoln. This stunning china carries forward the Monroe eagle to represent the president, but now the eagle holds arrows of war and an olive branch of peace and is accompanied by a banner that reads “E Pluribus Unum.”

#1. James Monroe

This was the first time an American president had a Congressionally-approved budget to buy china for formal White House occasions. Previous presidents had brought their personal dinnerware with them, so there was no precedent regarding what constituted “officially appropriate” china. "What should the presidential emblem look like? The Monroe service, like several other early designs, is presidential china as seen through the eyes of the artist." Every detail imagined and hand-painted, from the unusual marbled purplish-blue border to the bald eagle with widespread wings.

Harry S Truman: How Reading and Music Shaped his Presidency

Posted by RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX on Thu, Apr 28, 2016 @ 10:30 AM

harry truman

HARRY S. TRUMAN (1884-1972)
OUR 33RD PRESIDENT (1945-1953)

Harry S. Truman believed there were several life experiences that prepared him to become our 33rd president. In particular, he cited his background as a farmer, banker and Army soldier as well as his prior experience in government. But there were two very personal activities that carried him through his younger years and profoundly influenced his service as President.

Truman was born in 1884 in Lamar, Missouri and grew up in Independence. Poor eyesight caused Harry to begin wearing glasses when he was very young, making him self-conscious and the target of taunting at school. A childhood bout with diphtheria meant he wasn’t able to participate in sports like most boys his age. Instead, he turned to reading and music and discovered an abiding love for both.

He later said his “interiority complex” brought on by wearing glasses drove him to become “intellectually above” those who teased him. He liked to demonstrate his academic prowess in school, but believed one should not “lord it over those that you’ve defeated” in class.

Harry Truman claimed he had read every book in the Independence Public Library by the time he was 14, but historians suggest that was probably an exaggeration. At the time, the library contained more than 4,000 books. Nonetheless, young Harry clearly was a voracious reader and undoubtedly made his way through hundreds of the library’s offerings. One of his schoolmates remembered Harry reading two or three books on the weekends.

harry truman glasses

Harry was especially interested in biographies of American presidents and other government leaders, and in history. He said history offered "solid instruction and wise teaching which I somehow felt that I wanted and needed." Years later in his Memoirs, Truman acknowledged, "My debt to history is one which cannot be calculated. I know of no other motivation which so accounts for my awakening interest as a young lad in the principles of leadership and government."

As for music, Harry’s mother began teaching him to play the piano when he was 10. Later, he studied with a teacher in Kansas City who had herself studied under the famous European pianist Theodore Leschetitzky. One of Truman’s friends, Charlie Ross, recalled Harry “didn’t lack spunk when he braved the jeers of the boys to go regularly to his music teacher, carrying his music roll.”

Nonetheless, Truman simply wasn’t gifted enough to realize his dream – and his mother’s dream – of becoming a concert pianist. When he was 15, he abruptly stopped taking lessons. But playing the piano and enjoying a broad range of music from classical to folk songs continued to have a powerful impact on Truman’s life. In 1945, while playing for a group of Methodist women at a county fair, he told them that when he played the piano for Stalin, the Soviet leader responded by signing the Potsdam Agreement.

Throughout his life, Harry S. Truman was famous for saying, “My choice early in life was either to be a piano player in a whorehouse or a politician. And to tell the truth, there’s hardly any difference.” He often told people he never would have become president if he had been a more accomplished pianist. One can only imagine how that would have changed history.

Harry S. Truman: Surprise Foreign Affairs Specialist

Posted by RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX on Tue, Feb 10, 2015 @ 03:02 PM

Only a few men have ascended to the presidency of the United States because their predecessor died in office. And none was as unprepared for the realities of his new position as Harry S. Truman.

Truman had served as Vice President under Franklin Roosevelt just 82 days when FDR passed away from a stroke. During that entire time, he had only two meetings with the President. He was never apprised about details of the war effort in Europe or Japan, so he had no idea that the Soviet Union – a supposed ally of America – was growing increasingly belligerent. Even more shocking, he had never even heard of the Manhattan Project, the United States' atomic bomb program.

harry-truman-photo-3PRESIDENT HARRY S. TRUMAN IN A STRIKING POSE

These days it’s hard to imagine that a Vice President could have been so completely in the dark, especially about issues that went to the heart of our nation’s security. Truman was initially overwhelmed, telling the press, “I felt like the moon, the stars and all the planets had fallen on me.”

Harry S. Truman had no choice but to become an instant foreign affairs expert. But he rose to the occasion, making an indelible mark on the United States and the world as a statesman and leaving a legacy of significant foreign relations achievements.

truman-and-military-personnel-1THE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL EISENHOWER

Truman faced a series of international crises, including the continuation of war. Even after V-E Day in Europe, Japan refused to surrender. Truman conferred with military advisors and then ordered cities in Japan that were instrumental in their war effort to be bombed with America's newly-developed atomic bombs. After the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan did surrender, and there was hope for peace.

The new United Nations was established in 1945, to replace the failed League of Nations as a worldwide peacekeeper. And Truman convinced Congress to fund the European Recovery Program – nicknamed the Marshall Plan after the Secretary of State, George C. Marshall – a massive undertaking designed to get devastated western European nations back on their feet economically as quickly as possible.

harry-truman-signing-autographs-photo-1HARRY TRUMAN SIGNING A WWII PROCLAMATION

Unfortunately, all was not peaceful after all. With the Soviet Union threatening Greece and Turkey, Truman announced a new policy of containment that became known as the Truman Doctrine. When the Soviet Union blockaded western Berlin, Truman ordered the famous Berlin airlift to bring vital supplies to the citizens. To create a show of solidarity and strengthen the military might of the West, Truman worked to help establish the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in 1949.

The next year, Communist North Korea invaded South Korea, and President Truman felt compelled to become involved. He said there was “complete, almost unspoken acceptance on the part of everyone that whatever had to be done to meet this aggression had to be done. There was no suggestion from anyone that either the United Nations or the United States could back away from it.” And another war was underway - one that did not end until Truman had left office.

Our 33rd president, Harry S. Truman served a little less than two full terms. Yet in those few years, he led the way through the end of World War II and almost to the conclusion of the Korean War, and he managed to navigate the frosty waters of the early days of the Cold War. He truly became a major leader in foreign affairs, something he never could have envisioned when he first entered office as Vice President.

PRESIDENTIAL LIMOUSINE FLAG - HOW TO TELL WHAT IS AUTHENTIC?

Posted by RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX on Sun, Apr 03, 2011 @ 02:44 PM

In this Presentation we present a Totally Hand-Sewn Presidential Limousine Flag, accomplished in 1952, especially for The President of The United States - President Harry S. Truman.

presidential limousine flag, the raleigh degeer amyx collection, presidential flag,TOTALLY HAND-SEWN PRESIDENTIAL LIMOUSINE FLAG  ACCOMPLISHED IN 1952 FOR HARRY S. TRUMAN

It is difficult to underestimate the Superior Workmanship and Beauty of an Authentic Presidential Flag (21" x 29.5") - unless one actually sees or holds it. in the early years Presidential Limousine Flags were the same exact quality as the Oval Office Flag.  In addition to that, the older version Presidential Limousine Flag is much larger than a modern Presidential Flag of same sort.  Today the Presidential Limousine Flags are all silk-screened, and Significantly lack in Quality in Major and Significant ways.

presidential limousine flag, the collection of raleigh degeer amyx, presidents flag,A CLOSE-UP OF THE PRESIDENTIAL LIMO FLAG DELIVERED TO THE WHITE HOUSE ON JUNE 25TH 1952

In addition, the above Presidential Flag is not one-sided: on the verso is a completely separate panel (in other words there are two original Presidential Flags attached back to back) with each and every stitch accomplished by hand.  The Gifted Artist sews directly onto the fabric which is rayon or nylon and is fringed in Silk, accomplished with Gold and White heavy loop, threads.

Flags of this quality are always Officially Coded in a place not visible to the average person.  This particular Presidential Flag has various Special Coding Numbers, purposely not revealed in this narrative.  This Presidential Flag was hand-sewn in Philadelphia and it was designated for Delivery to the White House on June 25, 1952.  Acoordingly, because of the close proximity to The Administration of Dwight D. Eisenhower, this Flag may very well have been used briefly during two Presidential Administrations. The Quality of this Presidential Limousine Flag is Absolutely Breathtaking.

The Presidential Limousine Flag was never ever mounted on the Presidential Limousine, unless the President was the passenger; and it is appropriate that it always be mounted on the Limousine's front left fender.  The right fender is reserved for the American Flag.  The Presidential Flag described and presented here is a Major Historical Relic to say the least.  For over a quarter of a century ithis Stunning Flag has been in The Collection of Raleigh DeGeer Amyx (a.k.a.) The American Heritage Collection.

WHITE HOUSE CHINA - HARRY S TRUMAN SELECTS A TOTAL CLASSIC SERVICE

Posted by RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX on Mon, Mar 07, 2011 @ 04:29 PM

Bess Truman and Harry S Truman chose, in 1951,this Classic example for their Official White House China.  Depicted below is a beautiful 11.375" Service Plate, by Lenox, Inc., of Trenton, New Jersey. By an Executive Order of October 25, 1945, President Harry S Truman ordered up the final details of a standardized Presidential Seal design and directed same Seal to be used henceforth.  By 1951, a new State Dining Room Service was determined to be needed, in part, to complement the total restoration during the period  1948-1952 of The White House, to include the State Dining Room.

The principal design elements of the Elegant Truman China are a wideband soft green between Gold; and the outer rim has a Gold band etched with a cable or chain motif.  The Presidential Seal is rendered in a prominent Gold 3-D like effect. This Presidential Seal was then placed on each piece of the total of 120 piece Place Settings of the Truman White House China. However, The Presidential Seal  was prominently displayed in the exact center of the Service Plate only.

Without a doubt The President and Mrs. Truman had selected a Stunningly Elegant example that is not only a source of Pride of todays White House China Collection, but also coveted by advanced Collectors to this very day.

DID YOU KNOW HARRY S TRUMAN ALWAYS WASHED HIS OWN UNDERWEAR?

Posted by Hilda Amyx on Mon, Dec 20, 2010 @ 01:26 PM

When a young Harry S. Truman was being raised by his Confederate sympathizing Mother, she raised her son to follow certain rules - Rule #1...All men must learn to wash their own socks and underwear.....even as The President of the United States of America? Yes, that too!

 TRUMANto RaleighTruman Walking resized 600

The White House staff was aghast when they observed the President eschewing all offers of Presidential assistance who suggested that he throw his socks and underwear in a pile...and let the competent Executive Office staff take care of this chore.  President Harry Truman refused and was sometimes seen, in The White House, washing his underwear and his socks in the sink of his bathroom, just off the side of the Presidential bedroom suite.

It was hard for the bewildered staff not to be impressed!
