Unfortunately, some Olympiads have their share of unfortunate happenings. Let us call them the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Specifically, the Gold Medalist Champion Ben Johnson, of Canada, tested Positive for Stanozolol after his World Record, Gold Medal-Winning Performance in the 100 Meters - to become the Fastest Man Alive. Johnson initially denied knowingly using Steroids, but he later admitted it during a Canadian Government Inquiry. After serving a Suspension and being Stripped of his Gold Medal and World Record, Johnson returned to racing. However, some people don't always learn a lesson. In 1993, Ben Johnson earned a Lifetime Suspension Ban from all racing after testing Positive for Testosterone Doping.

LARGEST OLYMPIC WINNERS MEDAL EVER AWARDED TO A VICTORIOUS OLYMPIAN

Posted by RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX on Sun, Jul 03, 2011 @ 01:55 PM

The 1936 Garmisch Winners Medal (100mm) is, by far, the Largest Olympic Winners Medal ever awarded to a Victorious Olympian in Olympic History.  In fact, it is 100% Larger than many of The Awarded Olympic Gold, Silver & Bronze Prize Medals.

The Featured Medal is ONE of ONLY 36 Bronze Medals ever awarded to Winning Athletes in the 1936 WInter Games held in Germany. It is in Near Mint Condition - with no nicks of any kind.

In 1936, only German Photographers were even Admitted to the Venues, and only after Extensive Censorship by The Propaganda Ministry. This German Ministry determined what photographs were, according to only them, suitable for Publication in ALL International Newspapers and Magazines. It would be many years before the German People had back any Semblance of a Real Democracy.

0LYMPICS - 1908 SILVER WINNERS MEDAL -RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX COLLECTION

Posted by RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX on Thu, May 05, 2011 @ 06:39 PM

Featured, from The Raleigh DeGeer Amyx Collection, is a Mint Condition 1908 Silver Medal (30mm) - Presented in London, England, at the IV Olympiad. Interestingly, the Olympic Sport was for Racquets - The first and only time this event was Sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee (I.O.C.). An Elite Athlete, that competed in this event, almost always competed at the Olympics in Tennis as well.  And that was the case with the Elite Winner of this Olympic Prize Medal, one Henry Leaf of Great Britain

Not only is the Silver Winners Medal in Near Mint Condition but the equally Prized Original Presentation Case also accompanies this Historical piece of Perfection.  It is Ebony in color and is Impressively Embossed in a Striking Gilt trim.

1908 olympic presentation case|olympic prize medal|olympic winners medal|the raleigh degeer amyx collection|raleigh degeer amyx|THE RARE & HANDSOME PRESENTATION CASE THAT ACCOMPANIED THE OLYMPIC WINNERS MEDAL IN 1908

In these 1908 Olympics a Major Controversy erupted.  Heated arguments arose among the American Delegation and the British Delegation.  United States, Team Management, accused the British Host Nation of Judge Partiality. In other words, the Americans accused the British of Cheating. After further Investigation, the I.O.C. agreed with the Accusations made by the Americans and they Ordered Major changes in future Olympiads.  All Official Judges would, henceforth - and for the very first time, be used from multiple Competing Nations.

Another contentious issue was the fact that some Men had resisted for years Equality in Sports for Women. There was continued insistence by various Competitive Women (and by some men) that they be allowed to compete in many more Olympic Events.  Eventually the Powers That Be consented -  But it was a long hard road for Deserving Elite Women Athletes.  But their logical position eventually prevailed. And we, as Olympic Supporters and Spectators are the better for it. And so are the Internationally Popular Olympic Games.

BENJAMIN HARRISON WHITE HOUSE CHINA IN RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX COLLECTION

Posted by RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX on Thu, Apr 14, 2011 @ 09:22 AM

The Official White House China Selection by President Benjamin Harrison became an Important Statement by this late 19th Century First Family. At last, there was to be an organized system of keeping permanent track of just exactly what was to become The Standard of The White House China Collection as we know it today.

The Presidential China Selections shared here are from The Raleigh DeGeer Amyx Collection (a.k.a.) The American Heritage Collection. The Amyx Collection is currently recognized as the second finest, privately owned, Official White House China Collection in the World.

Benjamin and Caroline Scott Harrison, in 1892, selected the featured 9.5" enchanting State Dinner Plate - manufactured by Tressemanes & Vogt, Limoges. Caroline Scott Harrison's arrival to The White House, in 1889, brought to the position of First Lady a Gifted woman of many Cultural Interests.

caroline scott harrison, raleigh degeer amyx, white house china,A GIFTED FIRST LADY - CAROLINE SCOTT HARRISON

The First Lady had an appreciation of Historical Relics connected with White House History. And it was The First Lady's ambition to make The White House a comfortable and stylish residence for a President while at the same time preserving furniture, silver, glass and China of Past Administrations. Mrs. Harrison was also a Gifted Artist in her own right who especially delighted in China Painting. And now First Lady Harrison was ready to make a Dynamic Statement about her own Contribution to The White House China Collection. And Caroline Scott Harrison did do - in a Major Way. But Sadly this Lovely Lady Passed away, in The White House, from Brights Disease, on October 25, 1892.

In 1891, The Harrison's also added additional Elegance of the First Order, with the selection of this Beautiful 8.5" Breakfast Plate.  Tastefully, The First lady selected, for her Breakfast Plate, a white and blue border trimmed in Goldenrod which somehow was Artistically traced in Gold along the border of this Gorgeous Selection. In addition Caroline Scott Harrison was an Avid China Painter and she became one of the most involved First Ladies in the arena of The White House China Collection. This creative First Lady even held China Painting Classes, as she enthusiastically instructed her attentive pupils, within The Executive Mansion itself.
