An Extraordinary Artist -Frederick Hart (1943-1999)

Posted by RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX on Thu, Aug 29, 2013 @ 09:32 AM

Throughout the history of mankind, there have been very few artists who could envision a concept and mold it perfectly into a shape that is as breathtaking as the sculptures of Frederick Hart. As a young teen, Hart was already committed to a career in art. It was later, when he was visiting the Washington National Cathedral, that he discovered master stone cutter Roger Morigi at work. He secured a job as a mail clerk at the Cathedral to gain access to Morigi. Eventually he was able to negotiate an apprenticeship for himself.  After 5 years, Hart had mastered the art of stone carving. Hart was then to lauch his extraordianry career that wouldl lead to international fame.

Frederick Hart

FREDERICK HART - A GIFTED AMERICAN ARTIST

One of the most significant achievements in Hart’s lifetime was winning the commission for the design of the façade at the west entrance of the Washington National Cathedral in 1971. His contribution to this national treasure is nothing short of spectacular.

Hart favored working in his garage studio at night. He enjoyed spending his days near Dupont Circle in conversation with locals, watching people as they passed by. It was there that he spotted a beautiful woman who went past his spot every day. Eventually he spoke to her, introducing himself. He asked her to pose for his sculpture and she graciously agreed. As one might imagine, Miss Lindy Lain, this passer-by, later became Mrs. Lindy Hart, a dominant subject in Hart’s sculptures for the rest of his life. Together they had two sons, Frederick Lain Hart (1980- ) and Alexander Thaddeus Hart (1983- ).

While Hart was studying the book of Genesis, for his work at the Washington National Cathedral, Hart had an epiphany. He recognized that his extraordinary artistic ability was a gift from God, and promptly converted to Roman Catholicism. Because his 1978 marriage to Lindy Lain had been a civil ceremony, he chose to have their marriage blessed at St. Matthew’s Cathedral in 1980.

Before he began to work with acrylic, many of Hart’s sculptures were bronze or marble. He experimented with clear acrylic resin for many years before perfecting his patented technique, embedding one clear acrylic sculpture within another, now referred to as “sculpting with light.” It is this innovation that sets Frederick Hart apart.

THE RIDE

ACRYLIC SCULPTURE "THE RIDE" BY FREDERICK HART - ONE SUCH SCULPTURE RESIDES IN THE RALEIGH DeGEER AMYX COLLECTION

Because of the exquisite quality of his sculptures, Hart was commissioned to create numerous public monuments. Some of the more famous pieces include:

  • Acrylic Cross of the Millennium, presented to Pope John Paul II at the Vatican, Rome.
  • Limestone sculpture of The Creation at the Washington National Cathedral, Washington, D.C.
  • Bronze statue of Three Soldiers at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.
  • Statue of Senator Richard Russell in the rotunda of the Russell Senate Office Building, Washington, D.C.
  • Bronze bust of Senator Strom Thurmond, in the Capitol Building, Washington, D.C.
  • Marble bust of J. Danforth Quayle for the Senate’s Vice Presidential Bust Collection, Washington, D.C.
  • Bronze statue of President James Earl Carter in bronze installed at the Georgia State House, Atlanta.

The magnificence of these important works of art earned Hart the coveted National Medal of Arts. On the accompanying proclamation it reads: “For his important body of work—including the Washington National Cathedral's Creation Sculptures and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial's Three Soldiers—which heralded a new age for contemporary public art.” It was signed by President George W. Bush and dated November 17, 2004.

Sadly, Frederick Hart’s life came to an abrupt halt in 1999, a mere two days after he was diagnosed with lung cancer. May his memory live on through his magnificent art.

It was to the delight of avid collector Raleigh DeGeer Amyx that he was able to befriend Frederick Hart and acquire, from him, several striking artist’s proofs of his favorite sculptures for himself and his wife Hilda. Amyx and Hart visited numerous times at Hart’s Virginia residence or at the Virginia home of Raleigh DeGeer Amyx.

The Raleigh DeGeer Amyx Collection contains an array of priceless works of art as well as many historically significant pieces owned by U.S. presidents, Hollywood giants, sports legends and other important figures. Mr. Amyx welcomes serious discussions with fellow collectors concerning opportunities to buy, sell and trade museum-quality relics.

RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX COLLECTION- LENOX WHITE HOUSE CHINA-BILL CLINTON

Posted by RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX on Wed, Mar 28, 2012 @ 09:25 AM

It pleases us to feature the Dignified Official White House State Dinner Service of William Jefferson Clinton.

Bill Clinton (1993 to 2001) – This New Official White House China, By Lenox, of Trenton, New Jersey, was Commissioned for the 200th Anniversary of The White House. However, it did not arrive until after the Presidential Election of November  2000. This was a convenient arrival date, for the Clinton's, in that most Press Attention was focused in the direction of the new President-Elect - George W. Bush. Thus less attention was paid to the arrival of this Elegant 300 total piece Presidential Set, as approved of and ordered by President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.

For reasons unknown, the Press often focuses concentrated attention on any White House China ordered by an Incumbent President. And, in the past, the comments by the Press have often been negative. This is always difficult to comprehend in that so many modern President's and First Ladies receive Private Funds for the expensive Official White House Services presented by them for permanent inclusion into The White House China Collection. In other words, some of the World's most beautiful Presidential Porcelain arrives at The White House at zero expense to the American taxpayers.

The Clintons took a totally different approach in that they eschewed the nearly always previously ordered Official Presidential Seal and instead depicted the imposing 12" Service Plate with a Gold rendition of the Executive Mansion itself.  And the Service Plate was the only one of the set with an Enormous Gilded Gold Band.

The other pieces of this 12 Piece Place Setting (total of 300 pieces), of the William Jefferson Clinton Presidential Service, all featured architectural designs from the State Dining room, The East Room and Diplomatic Reception Room - within the Gold Band.

NATIVE AMERICAN INDIANS - CIRCA 1875 - HAND-MADE MOCCASINS

Posted by RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX on Mon, Oct 31, 2011 @ 07:44 AM

Exquisite Hand-Accomplished Beaded Suede Moccasins Late 19th Century. These Moccasins were created by an Artistic Kickapoo Indian sometime around 1875. The Kickapoos are believed to branch-off from the Iroquois Tribe. Today it is believed that Less than one thousand Kickapoos survive, in The United States.

The word Moccasin originated in America, approximately 1610 - and came from The Algonquin Tribe. Moccasins are a heel-less shoe made entirely of soft leather, such as Deerskin. The Sole is then brought up and attached to a piece of U-shaped leather right on the top of the foot. And then the Native American Artwork begins. When done as perfectly as this pair are, they are without question, a work of Art - even more so, 135 years after the fact.

GERONIMO - A NATIVE AMERICAN -BOLDLY SIGNED 1904 WORLDS FAIR PROGRAM

Posted by RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX on Mon, Jul 11, 2011 @ 10:16 AM

Geronimo – Indian Name is Translated into “Goyathlay” – (1829-1909) This American Apache Chieftain was Admitted to The Warriors Council in 1846. Early on, it was Obvious to Other Apaches, that Geronimo was a Warrior to be Reckoned With. From 1885 to 1886, Geronimo Led a Furious Uprising Against The American White Settlers. Many Innocent Whites, as well as those Not So Pure, were Killed by His Fellow Warriors and Him. Eventually, Geronimo was Captured by General George Crook. The Ever Repressant, Geronimo, Planned his Own Escape and it Worked. He then Continued to Fight Against The Whites only to Finally Run Out Of Food And Ammunition, Resulting in his Final Surrender to General Miles.

Geronimo and The Apache’s that Followed Him were Forcibly Removed to Florida. Eventually, Geronimo, his Family and other Apaches were Resettled into the Oklahoma Indian Territory; Where he Gave Up The Fight Forever and Became a Farmer. By this time, Geronimo's Legend was Well Known Throughout America. In 1904, Geronimo was asked to Appear at The St. Louis World’s Fair. He Really Did Not Want To Do This; but when they said he Could Charge A Fee for His Autograph he Appeared at The World’s Fair in 1904, in Indian Garb, and Signed All Day Long for 50 Cents a Piece — Provided the Paper was Furnished.

The above, Boldly Signed Souvenir Album (7.5"x10") is One of Those Very Scarce Surviving Examples. The Fact that Geronimo's Bold Signature is on the Front of the Official Program of the St. Louis World’s Fair, Dramatically Increases its Holographic Value into the Many Thousands of Dollars.

HANDWRITTEN ANS BY GEORGE CUSTER - BATTLE OF ANTIETAM-AMYX COLLECTION

Posted by RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX on Mon, Jul 04, 2011 @ 01:16 PM

What did Custer write during the Civil War-at the Battle of Antietam? Not long ago an important hand-written note (ANS) was located, in Virginia, not far from Washington, DC. The contents reveal a hands-on Battle Commander who at the moment of writing just happened to be Captain George Armstrong Custer.  The rank of General would be George Custer's within two years.

custer handwritten note ANSCAPTAIN GEORGE ARMSTRONG CUSTER'S IMPORTANT HAND-WRITTEN 1862 NOTE (ANS) - AUTHORED BY HIM AT THE SCENE OF THE  FEROCIOUS BATTLE OF ANTIETAM - JUST AS THE CONFEDERATES WERE RETREATING

George Armstrong Custer – (1839 1876) was a Captain of the Army of the Potomac in 1862.  The above Autographed Note Signed, by the Dashing young Captain Custer, was written during the Retreat of the Confederates - at Antietam in 1862. And a zealous young battlefield Captain (Custer) was in Hot Pursuit of the Confederates. Custer hurriedly writes from the Antietam Battlefield...."Col. Colburn ...We have captured another gun...a 12 pdr brass howitzer...Custer". At that time the Brash young Cavalry Captain was attached to the Command of Major General George McClellan.

When all is said on both sides, George Custer's Military Philosophy seemed to equal this: To be Eminently Successful on a field of Battle; pitch in against all odds and then extricate oneself-as well as your troops-if the going gets rough.  At Battle of Little Bighorn not even Custer could save himself.  For this truly was....."Custer's Last Stand"

GEORGE CUSTERMAJ. GEN. GEORGE ARMSTRONG CUSTER

Provenance: Preserved among the Civil War Papers of Union General Henry Jackson Hunt (1819 – 1889), an aid-de-camp of Gen. George McClellan - at Antietam - Later The Army of the Potomac's Chief of Artillery - with the rank of Major General. General Hunt would have been handed the Antietam Note from the recipient - Col. Colburn.

This was a quest special collecting project that took years to complete.

The identity of the Washington Redskins Players remains a Secret to this day. That is in keeping with a promise that Mr. Amyx made to these Washington Redskin World Championship starting players -  To be Discreet in protecting the identity of the Victorious NFL Players.

The Stunning Super Bowl Rings were presented to winning players and World Champions of the Washington Redskin's 1982, 1987 and 1991 NFL Teams.  For 12 Golden years, the Redskins were coached by Hall of Famer, Joe Gibbs.  During those 12 years, Coach Gibbs, took the Redskins to the Super Bowl 4 times – winning 3.

The Greatness of Coach Gibbs is better appreciated when one considers the fact that this Hall of Famer coached those 3 Super Bowls through 12 years with 3 different NFL starting Quarterbacks......Joe Theisman 1982, Doug Williams 1987, and Mark Rypien 1991. No other Hall of Fame Coach was faced with such a challenging predicament as to come up with 3 different Quarterbacks in multiple Super Bowls in such a short time span - 12 years.  Coach Gibbs, a deeply religious man, made major contributions to the Community of Washington, DC, as well as Maryland and Virginia. Joe Gibbs remains one of the most respected men ever to grace Washington, DC. - as well as the NFL.

THE BABY HAIRBRUSH OF JOHN F. KENNEDY- RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX COLLECTION

Posted by RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX on Sun, Jun 26, 2011 @ 03:22 PM

According to a White House Maid of 30 years, Viola "Big Mama" Wise, this textured Sterling Silver Hairbrush was used on John F. Kennedy, as an infant, as well as many years later, on The Hair of The President's son, JFK Jr., while he was a Toddler at The White House. Apparently, the President and First Lady included this hairbrush among their personal  belongings when they arrived at The White House on January 20, 1961.

Perhaps it was rather automatic that it would be used on JFK JR., and it was.  John F. Kennedy Jr., was a small infant when he arrived at the White House in 1961, and Viola Wise sometimes looked after him, which would include brushing JFK jr.'s hair, as needed.

The Maid, Viola Wise, shared many First Family as well as White House stories with Raleigh DeGeer Amyx, (shown at bottom of this feature), and also several Important Historical Relics.  Viola "Big Momma" Wise, was an Important White House contact for Mr. Amyx.  She also was the Possessor of a Major Personality and the two often interacted with each other during "Big Momma's" retirement years. Always, Miss Wise provided detailed written Provenance whenever sharing Historical Relics, that were given to her, as a result of her long career at The White House, with her friend, Raleigh DeGeer Amyx.
