John Quincy Adams: A Remarkable Statesman and President

Posted by RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX on Mon, Oct 08, 2012 @ 02:28 PM

John Quincy Adams (1767-1848) – was born in Massachusetts in 1767. The son of a remarkable mother and father – Abigail Adams and John Adams. As a boy of 9 years, he witnessed the Battle of Bunker Hill with his Mother. Because of the connections of John Quincy Adams (Pictured below); from a family point of view, he spent much of his childhood in Europe, becoming the benefactor of advanced education in more ways than one.

Upon his return to the United States, young Adams studied at Harvard and then studied law. In 1802 was elected to the United States Senate. He also served as the United States Minister to Russia and turned down an appointment to the United States Supreme Court. In 1814, he negotiated the Treaty of Ghent, which culminated in the ending of the War of 1812. From 1815 to 1817, Adams served as the Minister to Great Britain. From 1817 to 1825, he was Secretary of State in the Monroe Administration, at which time he signed the Document illustrated just below, currently in The Raleigh DeGeer Amyx Collection. In addition, Adams was a strong supporter of the doctrine which later became known as the Monroe Doctrine. This famed Doctrine limited European involvement of affairs in the Western Hemisphere.

In 1825, John Quincy Adams was Inaugurated President of the United States and called for the Federal Expenditure of Canals and Roadways to link the United States. He also proposed government support for scientific research, a novel concept to be so Early in our History.

After his retirement from his Presidency, John Quincy Adams enjoyed a lasting career in the United States House of Representatives, lasting 17 years until he suffered a massive stroke. Fittingly, Adams passed away in the United States Capitol in 1848 – All in all, a superb example of an American Public Servant – perhaps something more Americans should strive to be.

RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX COLLECTION- LENOX WHITE HOUSE CHINA-BILL CLINTON

Posted by RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX on Wed, Mar 28, 2012 @ 09:25 AM

It pleases us to feature the Dignified Official White House State Dinner Service of William Jefferson Clinton.

Bill Clinton (1993 to 2001) – This New Official White House China, By Lenox, of Trenton, New Jersey, was Commissioned for the 200th Anniversary of The White House. However, it did not arrive until after the Presidential Election of November  2000. This was a convenient arrival date, for the Clinton's, in that most Press Attention was focused in the direction of the new President-Elect - George W. Bush. Thus less attention was paid to the arrival of this Elegant 300 total piece Presidential Set, as approved of and ordered by President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.

For reasons unknown, the Press often focuses concentrated attention on any White House China ordered by an Incumbent President. And, in the past, the comments by the Press have often been negative. This is always difficult to comprehend in that so many modern President's and First Ladies receive Private Funds for the expensive Official White House Services presented by them for permanent inclusion into The White House China Collection. In other words, some of the World's most beautiful Presidential Porcelain arrives at The White House at zero expense to the American taxpayers.

The Clintons took a totally different approach in that they eschewed the nearly always previously ordered Official Presidential Seal and instead depicted the imposing 12" Service Plate with a Gold rendition of the Executive Mansion itself.  And the Service Plate was the only one of the set with an Enormous Gilded Gold Band.

The other pieces of this 12 Piece Place Setting (total of 300 pieces), of the William Jefferson Clinton Presidential Service, all featured architectural designs from the State Dining room, The East Room and Diplomatic Reception Room - within the Gold Band.

THE J.EDGAR HOOVER HIS MESSENGER KNEW - PART 2 OF 2 PARTS -"J. EDGAR"

Posted by RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX on Thu, Jan 19, 2012 @ 07:31 AM

One day Messenger Raleigh DeGeer Amyx was asked to see to it that a small package was taken directly to J. Edgar Hoover's home in Washington D.C. It was the Spring Valley area of Washington - in fact, many prominent Washingtonians lived there, including then Senator Lyndon B. Johnson - probably no more than a block from Director Hoover's home. When FBI Messenger Amyx knocked on the front door of Hoover's home, a valet answered the door. Amyx was shown in and directed downstairs, to leave the package on Director Hoover's Card table. This was more like a private area where a few fellows seemed to meet for poker some weekend evenings. On the way up the stairs, Amyx observed a Calender Girl type of Poster tacked to the wall.  This was really tame stuff but fairly typical of the day.

On another day Raleigh DeGeer Amyx was asked to take a message from J. Edgar Hoover to United States Senator Lyndon B. Johnson - and on another assignment Messenger Amyx was asked to deliver a memorandum to John F. Kennedy, three years before JFK became President of the United States. While in Senator Kennedy's front office Messenger Amyx told the receptionist that he had a message from Director Hoover to Senator Kennedy. The receptionist indicated that the message should be left in her incoming box. For some reason Amyx mustered up the concocted story that Director Hoover had stated "For the eyes of Senator Kennedy only" - well, that ruse worked and the next thing you know young Amyx was right there in Kennedy's main office as the Senator read something that probably could very well have been left  in JFK's front office. But as long as Amyx had bull dozed his way this far, the next question was to courteously ask the Presidential aspirant for a personalized autographed photograph - a request that Senator Kennedy smilingly and courteously honored. Today that same photograph inscribed by Kennedy to Raeigh DeGeer Amyx hangs witin his own office.

Raleigh DeGeer Amyx never  suspected any relationship between J. Edgar Hoover and Clyde Tolson to be anything other than two trusted friends who worked closely together. And not one other person within the FBI that Amyx saw daily had any other thoughts concerning their relationship - including long time FBI Agents. And Headquarters was loaded with men in Supervisory positions at the Highest Level. At that time the United States was divided into two halves, with a senior Special Agent in charge of either East of the Mississippi or West of the Mississippi. In fact, Raleigh DeGeer Amyx was asked to serve for some months, the two National Supervisors of Kidnapping, White Slave Traffic and Obscene matter. Again, heady stuff for a 19 year old.

CLYDE TOLSON & J EDGAR HOOVER|THE RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX COLLECTION|THE AMERICAN HERITAGE COLLECTION|CLYDE TOLSON & J. EDGAR HOOVER FOLLOWING AN INVITATION TO ATTEND A FORMAL EVENT

There was always someting huge going on at FBI Headquarters and Amyx saw many things up close and personal. And he respected many Associate Directors, Inspectors and Senior National Supervisors whom he was with on a daily basis. Favorites included The Director of the Investigation Division-Alex Rosen, the Director of Domestic Intelligence, Alex Belmont and especially, Inspector Deke DeLoach, a man that went out of his way to help the young Messenger Amyx out of a jam. And 40 years later the two accidentally bumped into each other at the famous five star resort where the now mature former FBI Messenger could properly extend his gratitude to Inspector DeLoach as one man to another.

There were three issues that troubled young Amyx during and after his tenure with the FBI. And really only three major issues - 1-  The seemingly endless lack of trust that seemed to exist between the CIA and the FBI. It was all so counter productive to the Nation's interest of National Security. 2- Another issue was Director Hoover's seemingly endless delay in tackling the issue of Organized Crime at a much earlier point during Hoover's 48 year tenure as Director of the FBI. Hoover could have and should have done a bit better. 3 - And finally J. Edgar Hoover's failing to resign just about the same time that young Messenger Amyx first met up with him. If he had done so he would have left the position of FBI Director as a man deeply trusted by the vast majority of Americans. But he did not. Hoover stayed on way past the required age of retirement for every other thousands of men that served under him at the FBI. Hoover expected the other FBI Agents out  by age 55. For some reason,  it seemed appropriate for him to remain in his lofty position until his sudden death in 1972 at age 77.

It seemed that Hoover's primary hobby, other than horse racing, was his FBI position. Hoover seemed to just love being Director of the FBI. He had taken the FBI kicking and screaming into the modern era of law enforcement and then insisted upon staying in power until he could no longer keep up with the modern era at all. It was to be an unfortunate choice that Hoover came to make. He was a Segregationist in attitude and a product of his times. However, some people are more willing to learn new things and to better self evaluate. Hoover gradually grew to the point where he was obviously unable to do that.

Long an admirer of Director Clint Eastwood's work and his often accurate betrayal of history Mr. Amyx takes issue with Eastwood's novelized attempt as it pertains to the life of J. Edgar Hoover in the 2011 film, "J.Edgar." In brief, if you asked Mr. Eastwood a direct question of a scene where he shows J. Edgar Hoover kissing his Deputy Director, Clyde Tolson on the lips, his long time friend and associate, Eastwood would categorically admit that he flat out made the kissing scene up on the fly. It was not even in the movie script. And there is not now nor was there ever any known witness to such an event in the lives of either men. And this novelized attempt at audience seduction causes one to question a bit more of this Eastwood "J. Edgar"production. It is out of character for the film legend to do something such as this. Quite surprising indeed.

THE J.EDGAR HOOVER HIS MESSENGER KNEW & CLINT EASTWOOD'S "J. EDGAR"

Posted by RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX on Mon, Jan 16, 2012 @ 02:03 PM

When Raleigh DeGeer Amyx was a young man, he applied for night school at American University as well as for a full-time job with the FBI, in Washington DC.  After the detailed and necessary background investigation the Federal Bureau of Investigation accepted him for a position of Clerk.  As such, he expected to be assigned to the FBI File Section, sorting through voluminous FBI files. Well, he was,  but that assignment did not last long.

FBI HEADQUARTERS|DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE|RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX|J.EDGAR HOOVER|THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE - WASHINGTON D.C. - THE ATTORNEY GENERAL AS WELL AS F.B.I. DIRECTOR HOOVER WERE BOTH ON THE 5TH FLOOR PRIOR TO THE EXISTENCE OF THE NEW FBI HEADQUARTERS

Shortly after being in the File Section,  more than one FBI agent asked the young man his name.  Special Agents in FBI Headquarters noticed that Amyx always addressed them by their title, always said good morning, appeared well-dressed - always wearing cuff links. At any rate, Amyx was told to report to J. Edgar Hoover's personal Secretary of long-standing, Helen Gandy. At that time the FBI headquarters was located in the present day Department of Justice building on Pennsylvania Avenue. In fact, Director J. Edgar Hoover's office was on the 5th floor not far from the office of The Attorney General.

FBI HEADQUARTERS|J. EDGAR HOOVER AND AMYX|THE AMERICAN HERITAGE COLLECTION|THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE|FOR WELL OVER A YEAR IT WAS STRAIGHT THROUGH THESE FORBODING FBI DOORS THAT MESSENGER RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX TRAVERSED TO SERVE J. EDGAR HOOVER

Ms. Gandy, Mr. Hoover's Personal Secretary, of well over a quarter of a century, shared with Raleigh DeGeer Amyx the fact that she was presently interviewing various people for the position of Messenger to Director J. Edgar Hoover.  Not long after that, Amyx was advised that he had been selected for that position.  In addition to that, Amyx was also selected to become a Tour Leader at FBI Headquarters. The combination of the two assignments brought young Amyx to each and every section of internal FBI Headquarters often. For a mere nearly 19 year old it was heady stuff. And it was to become the time of his life - career wise that is.

raleigh degeer amyx|j.edgar hoover|washington d.c.|the national archives|RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX - IN 1957, NOT FAR FROM THE F.B.I. HEADQUARTERS - ON PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE DELIVERING A MESSAGE FROM J. EDGAR HOOVER

Many of the Internal FBI messages that Raleigh DeGeer Amyx carried were kept in a  leather pouch. They were often confidential and or secret messages in nature. Several times during each day, the young Messenger was asked to deliver letters and memorandums to each of J. Edgar Hoover's top 10 Associate Directors - as well as to Hoover's number #2 man, Clyde Tolson. In fact, Messenger Amyx often personally handed Clyde Tolson personal messages from Mr. Hoover directly to his desk, no more than 100 feet down the hallway from Mr. Hoover. And of course, it was tempting to read some of the private messages from time to time.  However, both professional FBI men generally, in memorandum, stuck strictly to business.  But nearly each day Hoover and Tolson would meet for lunch and take the same elevator directly to the basement level, were Director Hoover's chauffeur driven bullet resistant limousine awaited them.

J. EDGAR HOOVER & CLYDE TOLSON|THE RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX COLLECTION|THE AMERICAN HERITAGE COLLECTION|CLYDE TOLSON & J. EDGAR HOOVER HAVE TAKEN THEIR ASSIGNED TICKET SEATS TO ATTEND ONE OF THE HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION JOE LOUIS'S EARLY TITLE DEFENSES

Amyx was told if he was ever in the elevator with J. Edgar Hoover to always release the button calling for a particular floor stop for himself and respectfully permit both Hoover and Tolson to take the elevator directly to the garage and to the waiting Limousine. But this act of deference by all FBI employees was done more out of respect than out of fear. It was, after all, 1957 and 1958. Things were different then. Another thing was to always remember that your hand was not sweating if you happened to be in a situation where you might shake hands with Director Hoover.  Why? Because J. Edgar Hoover felt that a sweating palm was an indication of insecurity and or weakness in a man. Well, again, it was the 1950's and if that was what Mr. Hoover wanted, then no big deal.

Whenever Messenger Amyx ran into J. Edgar Hoover, he always spoke in his booming baritone voice. Never really exactly friendly but certainly cordial in a professional way. But one day Amyx  was walking near Hoover's 5th floor office and did not see J. Edgar Hoover coming around the corner. For some inexplicable reason Raleigh Amyx was walking along in the Department of Justice counting cadence - like a good soldier. Later Director Hoover commented that it was not necessary to count cadence while doing FBI duties within FBI Headquarters. Well, Mr. Hoover was right. Amyx never did it aloud again. That is for certain.

NATIVE AMERICAN INDIANS - CIRCA 1875 - HAND-MADE MOCCASINS

Posted by RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX on Mon, Oct 31, 2011 @ 07:44 AM

Exquisite Hand-Accomplished Beaded Suede Moccasins Late 19th Century. These Moccasins were created by an Artistic Kickapoo Indian sometime around 1875. The Kickapoos are believed to branch-off from the Iroquois Tribe. Today it is believed that Less than one thousand Kickapoos survive, in The United States.

The word Moccasin originated in America, approximately 1610 - and came from The Algonquin Tribe. Moccasins are a heel-less shoe made entirely of soft leather, such as Deerskin. The Sole is then brought up and attached to a piece of U-shaped leather right on the top of the foot. And then the Native American Artwork begins. When done as perfectly as this pair are, they are without question, a work of Art - even more so, 135 years after the fact.

FINALLY LOCATED - THE OFFICIAL WHITE HOUSE CHINA - JAMES MONROE

Posted by RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX on Sun, Aug 21, 2011 @ 08:05 AM

A Majestic White House piece of China once owned and used by President James Monroe and First Lady Elizabeth Monroe has finally been located. This is an extremely rare Presidential Dessert Plate once in the Official White House China Collection - Presently in The Collection of Raleigh Degeer Amyx.

WHITE HOUSE CHINAJAMES MONROE'S  MAJESTIC WHITE HOUSE DESSERT PLATE

Pictured above is an 8.625" Dessert Plate – French; manufactured by Dagoty and Honore' - Nast Paris.  Some attribute this Stunning Plate to Andrew Jackson.  Recent investigation concludes that this is not so. After careful research, especially by Robert McNeil and Susan Gray Detweiler, this rendering is more aptly related to the James Monroe Administration – Why? Because the important  Mark on the verso of the plate (shown below) was used only during the years 1816-1820 - thus, James Monroe and not Andrew Jackson, as this stunning pattern was so often credited to.

james monroe white house china VERSO MARKING OF THE JAMES MONROE WHITE HOUSE SERVICE

Other important points clearly establish the blue bordered service as coming from James and Elizabeth Monroe. Two cups matching this exact same service are currently at the Monroe Museum in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Also in the Monroe Museum is further Provenance of ownership, indicating that it came directly to them via descendants of President and Mrs. Monroe.  Also, pieces emanating from two other different Public Collections share a common Provenance through Descendants of Daniel Webster. These are specifically identified as the White House Service  having belonged to Elizabeth and James Monroe.

Today, this Historically Important piece of Presidential Porcelain, once used in The White House, is in The Collection of Raleigh DeGeer Amyx, also known as The American Heritage Collection. By far, most President's did not order Official White House China for The Executive Mansion. They simply made due with the beautiful patterns left there by other Presidents and First Ladies. Thus, White House China, actually used within The White House for Offical purposes, remains one of the rarest and most sought after pieces of History of our Nation's American Heritage.

Geronimo – Indian Name is Translated into “Goyathlay” – (1829-1909) This American Apache Chieftain was Admitted to The Warriors Council in 1846. Early on, it was Obvious to Other Apaches, that Geronimo was a Warrior to be Reckoned With. From 1885 to 1886, Geronimo Led a Furious Uprising Against The American White Settlers. Many Innocent Whites, as well as those Not So Pure, were Killed by His Fellow Warriors and Him. Eventually, Geronimo was Captured by General George Crook. The Ever Repressant, Geronimo, Planned his Own Escape and it Worked. He then Continued to Fight Against The Whites only to Finally Run Out Of Food And Ammunition, Resulting in his Final Surrender to General Miles.

By this time, Geronimo's Legend was Well Known Throughout America. In 1904, Geronimo was asked to Appear at The St. Louis World’s Fair. He Really Did Not Want To Do This; but when they said he Could Charge A Fee for His Autograph he Appeared at The World’s Fair in 1904, in Indian Garb, and Signed All Day Long for 50 Cents a Piece — Provided the Paper was Furnished.

JFK EYEGLASSES -JOHN KENNEDY PREFERRED NOT TO BE PHOTOGRAPHED WEARING

Posted by RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX on Thu, Jul 07, 2011 @ 03:31 PM

Because of the meticulous care of the Prescription Eyeglasses of John F. Kennedy;  they have finally been located.  They are now in The Collection of well known Historian and Collector, Raleigh DeGeer Amyx......a good friend of several former members of the United States Secret Service - that served many of our Nation's  Presidents.

JOHN F. KENNEDY'S EYEGLASSESJOHN F. KENNEDY'S EYEGLASSES AS RECENTLY PRESENTED IN BLUE SUEDE - AND ARCHIVALLY FRAMED

Inspector Floyd Boring, a retired U.S. Secret Service Agent carefully documented and stored away the JFK's Eyeglasses for safekeeping.  Inspector Boring was the Secret Service's Inspector directly charged with heading up the White House Detail of John F. Kennedy. He did so during the entire Administration of President Kennedy. Not so many years after the Assassination of the President, both Mr. Amyx and Inspector Boring meticulously put together more detailed written Provenance on the Stationery of the US Secret Service.  The Provenance was signed by Inspector Floyd Boring.

HISTORIAN & COLLECTOR RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX AND INSPECTOR FLOYD BORING IN 1984HISTORIAN & COLLECTOR RALEIGH DEGEER AMYX AND SECRET SERVICE INSPECTOR FLOYD BORING IN 1984

Today, the Prescription Eyeglasses of JFK are handsomely and archivally framed; and often seen by numerous others during special tours conducted by Mr. Amyx. The reason that Floyd Boring (1915 – 2008) was often in possession of JFK's eyeglasses, was primarily because the President did not like his pockets encumbered with 3-D items.  Accordingly, Floyd Boring not only carried the eyeglasses of The President but Cash as well.  Why Cash?  Because JFK usually had none.  In fact, Inspector Boring would sit next to the President during Mass and slip him a  $100.00 bill to be placed in the collection plate.  Later that same day Boring would appear in the office of Evelyn Lincoln, the President's Secretary, and he would be reimbursed one-hundred dollars out of petty cash.  Evelyn Lincoln served as JFK's Secretary for twelve consecutive years and her office was located in the White House adjacent to the Oval Office.  Mrs. Lincoln  was also well acquainted with Raleigh DeGeer Amyx. She also contributed to Amyx's well known Collection, also known as The American Heritage Collection.

Later, Raleigh  DeGeer  Amyx had the historic good fortune of obtaining the prescription eyeglasses of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy as well as those of Sen. Ted Kennedy.  Since then, both of their Prescription Eyeglasses have been  framed with similar presentation impact. In fact, the framing of the Kennedy brothers Eyeglasses are as impressive as the hand-wrapped suede framing as seen on the President's Eyeglasses at top. All framing in the Raleigh Degeer Amyx Collection was accomplished by Rick Badwey of Showcase Portfolios located in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia.
