RALEIGH DeGEER AMYX AT THE SPEAKERS PODIUM IN THE WHITE HOUSE BRIEFING ROOM IN 1988 DURING THE RONALD REAGAN ADMINISTRATION. THERE WAS LITTLE DEMAND FOR RETURN BRIEFINGS BY MR. AMYX.
Some might say it was just a matter of time. Given the fact that Raleigh DeGeer Amyx has achieved eminent status as a collector of Official White House China - and as an expert on both the china and the Presidents who chose and used it - it is most fitting that he has been inducted into a Hall of Fame.
We all remember high school graduation - that time when our best friends draw little hearts and write “most likely to succeed!!!” in our senior yearbooks. We all scatter and move on, perhaps maintaining contact with some of our classmates, but maybe not. High school becomes an ever more distant part of our past. We really don’t expect to hear from them again, except when reunions are planned.
MR. AMYX FEELS TRULY HONORED TO BE INCLUDED IN THE ATHERTON HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION HALL OF FAME CLASS OF 2018.
But Raleigh DeGeer Amyx attended Atherton High School in Louisville Kentucky. A high school, noted for its academics, that has made a point since 2001 of honoring exceptionally distinguished graduates by inducting them into the Atherton High School Alumni Association Hall of Fame.
Mr. Amyx says he was shocked when he received a call this past summer, informing him that he had been selected for the Hall of Fame. “I never associated myself with being inducted into any Hall of Fame,” he says. But he believes it is a validation of what he and other inductees have achieved since childhood, based on a lifetime of work and what each person has contributed to society as a whole.
He is in impressive company indeed. The school says previous inductees include “senators, a brigadier general, authors, teachers, university presidents, doctors, financiers, congressmen, entrepreneurs, a ballerina and more.” Raleigh DeGeer Amyx was chosen based on the breadth and historical significance of his Official White House China collection, his historical knowledge, and the fact that he has been engaged on occasion by the Smithsonian to appraise certain items donated to the museum, and other factors.
FOR 4 DECADES, COLLECTING AND PRESERVING HISTORY HAVE BEEN RALEIGH DeGEER AMYX'S SOLE ENDEAVORS.
The ceremony and dinner, attended by some 250 people, was held October 12, 2018. Because it is not physically convenient for Mr. Amyx to fly, his wife Hilda and a couple of his adult children packed up their roomy Lincoln Navigator and drove to Louisville from the Amyx home in Florida. The other children met them there – no one wanted to miss this event! Mr. Amyx, who joined eight other inductees in speaking to the gathering, is only the second person from his class of 200 graduates (1956) to be honored with a place in the Hall of Fame.
The Atherton Alumni Association says their inductees are distinguished, impressive, and inspiring – words that certainly describe the career and persona of Raleigh DeGeer Amyx.
“I had a ball,” he laughs. “I got to get dressed up in a tux, and I got a handsome award.”
Distinguished historian and collector Raleigh DeGeer Amyx has acquired a remarkable number of scarce or rare pieces of Official White House China. Mr. Amyx’s passion for American historical artifacts has been his sole focus for nearly 40 years. Mr. Amyx's collection is the largest privately-owned collection of extremely high-quality, as well as the rarest, Official White House China and Presidential China in the world.
